The Dancer and the Dance
Here are formal and informal shots of rehearsals, performances, and unclassifiable serendipitous moments in ballet, modern, avant-garde and ethnic dance. I am in awe of those possessing the artistry and mastery to create art from moving their bodies through space. But a "still" photograph of movement is an obvious paradox. The photograph is "about" movement, but is itself motionless - a strange artifact of the time-stopping camera. The gift it gives us is the opportunity to meditatively probe one instant of the poetry of movement, to contemplate it without the sudden "distraction" of the next moment, and the next. It lets us view the beauty of dance distilled to an iconic (or iconoclastic) gesture.
